BOTOX® is one of the most widely-recognized cosmetic treatments in the world. This injectable works by relaxing the muscles that are responsible for wrinkles like crow’s feet and frown lines. Dysport® is a competitor that’s also made from the same main ingredient. BOTOX® and Dysport® are often considered interchangeable, but there are differences between these two popular wrinkle treatments. If you’re considering an injectable for fine lines and wrinkles, there are some things to know about choosing between these two treatments in New Orleans.
How They’re Similar
BOTOX® gained FDA approval in 2002. Dysport® was approved in 2009, although it had been used in Europe for many years before then. BOTOX® and Dysport® both contain the same purified protein solution, which works by inactivating the nerves that stimulate certain muscles to contract. When the muscles that lead to overactive facial expressions are inactivated, the muscles relax and the appearance of the lines and wrinkles reduces. In many clinical studies, patients and physicians are unable to differentiate the results.
How They’re Different
The most common question we hear about these two treatments in New Orleans is, what is the difference between Dysport® and BOTOX®? Is one better than the other? Despite many similarities, there are some differences between the two:
• Dysport® has smaller molecules.
• Dysport® usually diffuses more than BOTOX®, which means it spreads and effects a larger area.
• Dysport® may not last as long as BOTOX®, but this is still being studied.
• Dysport® and BOTOX® are diluted differently.
Of course, Dysport® and BOTOX® are very similar, but some people and providers in New Orleans find they prefer one over the other. At Metairie Plastic Surgeons, we are proud to offer both of these treatments to our clients in New Orleans and the surrounding areas.
