Chin Surgery FAQs: Are Chin Implants Permanent?

chin implants la

Receiving a chin implant is an excellent way to improve the appearance of your jawline and harmonize your facial features. At Metairie Plastic Surgeons in Metairie, Louisiana, we can also use an implant to minimize the appearance of your double chin. If you live in the New Orleans area, you should consider using chin surgery to enhance your profile.

Chin Surgery FAQs: Are Chin Implants Permanent?

We can use a chin implant to improve the projection of your chin, reduce the visibility of your double chin, and enhance your jawline. This cosmetic procedure is known as a mentoplasty. During your procedure, we will secure a synthetic implant onto your jaw bone. Enhancing your profile is a good way to balance your nose, chin, and other facial features. Your chin surgery will create permanent improvements in your appearance.

Your chin implant will be very strong and durable. As a result, this implant will permanently improve the contours of your face. Under most circumstances, you will not need to receive a replacement device during your lifetime. Although your cheeks, lips, and other facial features will continue to age, your enhanced chin should last for many years.

Why Do I Have a Receding Chin?

A receding chin develops when your chin projects too far back in relation to your other facial features. Scientists call this condition retrogenia. Your genes, the effect of age, and other conditions can cause you to have a receding chin.

Your Genes

The relationship between your lower and upper jaw will affect the appearance of your chin. If your lower jaw is set too far back, you may appear to have a receding chin. Your family history will influence the shape and overall appearance of your chin. If your mother, father, and other family members have receding chins, you will be more likely to have this facial feature.

Under most circumstances, this condition will not cause you to experience discomfort or suffer from health problems. However, your receding chin may cause you to feel embarrassed about your profile.

Your Age

As you become older, you will be more likely to experience bone and tissue loss in your face. These changes can cause your chin to recede.

Your Teeth

If you used pacifiers or sucked on your thumb while you were a child, you might develop an overbite. An overbite occurs when your upper teeth overlap too far in front of your lower teeth. If you have a severe overbite, your chin may move back toward your ears. This change can make your chin look very small and undeveloped. In addition, you might look like you have a double chin.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Chin Implant?

If you don’t like the appearance of your chin, you may be a good candidate for this cosmetic procedure. Before we improve your chin, we will carefully assess your facial structure. During this time, we will analyze the condition of your jaw and teeth. If you have a recessed chin and a healthy jaw, you may be eligible for an implant.

However, you might not be able to receive this chin procedure if you are a smoker, have high blood pressure, or suffer from a bleeding disorder. In addition, you cannot receive an implant if your chin is still growing. Further, we will advise you to use a different technique to improve your appearance if you have significant bone loss in this part of your face.

How Should I Prepare for My Chin Implant?

If you are a smoker, we will advise you to avoid using products that contain nicotine before and after you receive your implant. In addition, we may advise you not to take aspirin and other types of blood-thinning supplements and medications. For example, you might have to stop taking vitamin E for a while. In addition, you will need to arrange for time off from your job or school.

We may also advise you to obtain prescription medications before your appointment and set up a comfortable room where you can rest during the beginning of your recovery period. Since you will receive anesthesia during your procedure, you will not be able to drive yourself back home. As a result, you should also recruit a relative or friend to take you home after you receive your implant.

What Will Happen During My Chin Procedure?

This is usually an outpatient procedure. Before we improve your chin, we will give you anesthesia. Depending on your needs, we may provide general anesthesia that will cause you to be fully asleep during the rest of your appointment. Alternatively, you might receive local anesthesia that will numb the tissues in your chin. We will also provide sedation that will allow you to feel relaxed.

After your anesthesia has started to work, we will make a very small incision under your chin. This incision will allow us to make space for your implant. Next, we will carefully insert your implant into your chin and mold this device around your chin bone. After your implant is in position, we will close up your incision and put bandages onto your chin. It will usually take us less than 60 minutes to finish this process.

Will I Have a Long Recovery Period After I Improve My Chin?

You will usually have a brief period of downtime after you receive your chin implant. Although your recovery period will depend on your health, age, and other factors, you will usually be able to return to your schoolwork or job within seven days. While your facial tissues are adjusting to your new implant, we may advise you to use cold compresses and take medication.

In addition, you should be prepared to elevate your head and sleep with your face in an upright position for one to two days. We may also advise you to eat a liquid diet and avoid consuming solid foods during this time. Further, you will need to avoid playing sports, running, and engaging in other types of rigorous exercise for a while. After about three to four weeks, you will usually be able to return to your typical exercise routine.

When Will I See the Final Changes in My Chin?

You should see a positive change in your chin after your procedure is finished. As your facial tissues adjust to your new implant, your jawline and chin will continue to improve. You will usually see significant improvements within 30 days. You can expect to see the final changes in your chin within about three months.

Will My Improvements Look and Feel Natural?

Chin implants in LA come in many different shapes and sizes. Many of these implants are made of a biocompatible material called silicone. Before we improve your chin, we will talk about your aesthetic desires and analyze the condition of your chin and jawline. During this time, we will take measurements of this area of your face. We will use this information to select an implant that will enhance your facial contours in a natural, attractive manner.

Your implant will be designed to feel like your chin bone. As a result, your jawline and chin will feel natural after you receive your implant.

Can I Combine a Chin Implant With Other Cosmetic Procedures?

Depending on your health and cosmetic goals, we may be able to perform other procedures during your chin surgery. For example, you might be able to receive rhinoplasty or liposuction during your chin augmentation procedure.

Receiving a Rhinoplasty

Receiving a chin implant and a nose job is an ideal way to dramatically enhance the balance of your nose, chin, and other facial features. We can use cosmetic techniques to decrease the size of your nose, minimize the appearance of your nostrils, and reduce the width of your nose. In addition, we can reduce the visibility of a bump on your nose.

If you would like to achieve more subtle improvements in your nose, we may use a closed technique to complete your rhinoplasty. During this type of aesthetic procedure, we will make incisions on the inside of your nose. If you would like to make more dramatic changes in your appearance, we may use an open technique during your appointment. During an open procedure, we will make small incisions on the outside of your nose.

Receiving Liposuction

If you have extra fat under your chin, you might decide to receive liposuction during your chin augmentation procedure. Removing unwanted fat from your neck and strengthening your jawline will enhance the contours of your face and give you a slimmer appearance. During your appointment, we will use a hollow tube to gently extract some of the fat in your neck.

Will My Health Insurance Pay for My Chin Implant?

Your chin augmentation procedure will be designed to improve your profile and facial contours. Since this procedure is performed for purely cosmetic reasons, your health insurance probably will not cover the cost of your chin implant.

Fortunately, this is a cost-effective procedure that will create lasting improvements in your facial features. In addition, we offer several financing options that will help you cover the cost of your chin implant. For example, you may be able to use a CareCredit or Alphaeon credit card to spread the cost of your chin procedure over several months.

Can I Use Minimally Invasive Methods to Reduce My Double Chin?

If you would like to use a minimally invasive technique to contour your face, you should think about receiving Kybella injections. The scientific term for a double chin is submental fullness. If you cannot improve your chin fat with exercise programs and diet changes, you will probably be a good candidate for this injectable treatment.

Kybella contains a chemical called deoxycholic acid. When we inject this solution into your chin, this chemical will destroy some of your extra fat cells. It will take us about 15 minutes to inject this solution. As you continue to receive Kybella treatments, your facial contours will become sleeker and more attractive. It’s normal to achieve dramatic results after you receive two to four Kybella sessions.

Enhance Your Chin

If your recessed chin is causing you to feel unhappy about your profile, you should think about receiving chin surgery. We can use a chin implant to define your jawline, diminish your double chin, and balance your facial features. If you live in the New Orleans area, you should schedule an initial consultation at Metairie Plastic Surgeons in Metairie, Louisiana to learn more about this cosmetic procedure.
