For nearly 40 years, Dr. Gustavo A. Colon has grown his practice alongside his family. While few people would assume that plastic surgery is a family practice, Dr. Colon’s people-centered approach to his work has become just that. From repairing his kids’ broken noses from sports games to performing cosmetic surgeries for personal enhancement, family has provided the inspiration for the Colon-Sands’ plastic surgery practice.
Dr. Colon’s junior partner, Dr. Thomas T. Sands, is emblematic of just that. Dr. Sands is Dr. Colon’s son-in-law who has spent a number of years learning his work ethic and understanding why and how practice and family can be both synonymous and beneficial to the field of plastic surgery.
The kind of care only family can provide is the life-breath of this practice. From the décor of the office to the practice’s employees, every component is a creation of Dr. Colon’s family. Every employee has worked with Dr. Colon for over 30 years; while this provides high levels of expertise, the most profound effect is that every member of the team is family. In a single day at the office, all three generations of the Colon-Sands family may be found working together or “checking in” with one another. This provides for a constant reminder to both the doctors and the employees that everyone who walks through the door should be treated as family.
To ensure the sustainability of this vision in their work, Dr. Colon and Dr. Sands meet their patients where they are. Whether they are children with medical or therapeutic needs or adults with a desire for personal improvements, they strive to tailor their approach to surgery, outcomes of surgery, and patient care to the individual needs of the patient. While ability to pay, personal histories, and personal needs are always considered, they do not necessarily limit or influence Drs. Colon’s and Sands’ patient care. Each patient is considered a member of the family, so the doctors strive to find the delicate balance between patient desires, patient histories, and overall wellbeing to ensure the highest levels of patient comfort and satisfaction.
