What is Micro-Needling?
Micro-needling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation method that uses ultra-thin needles to stimulate controlled healing and collagen production. The procedure is chemical-free, involves minimal downtime, and can be used to correct a wide variety of cosmetic issues. At Metairie Plastic Surgeons, we’re proud to use the SkinPen® and Cutera Secret RF for all of our micro-needling procedures. These devices are effective enough to dramatically improve the appearance of the skin, while still being gentle enough for safe use on all skin types.
SkinPen® with SkinFuse®
SkinFuse® is an enriching topical skin care treatment that many of our patients use after their SkinPen® procedures. Following a SkinPen® micro-needling treatment, SkinFuse® provides patients with an excellent, simple way to deliver healing vitamins and nutrients to the skin. This both speeds up the healing process and improves the results of each SkinPen® treatment.
Cutera Secret RF
This cutting-edge microneedling system is among the latest and greatest innovations in aesthetic technology. Utilizing radiofrequency energy, the Cutera Secret RF works to remodel the skin from the inside out. By stimulating the production of collagen at various depths, we can help address many cosmetic concerns you are experiencing such as wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, sun damage, and more.
How Does it Work?
Microneedling utilizes the power of the body’s own natural healing response to stimulate skin rejuvenation and renewal. Before beginning the procedure, a topical anesthetic cream is applied to the treatment area to improve patient comfort. During treatment, a series of fine needles are passed over the treatment area. These needles create tiny columns in the dermis that are small enough to leave the surface of the skin intact, but large enough to send blood, growth factors, and other healing materials to the area.
Over time, this healing response translates into more evenly toned, tight, youthful-looking skin. Full recovery from each session usually takes 3-4 days. While some areas can be corrected in as little as one treatment, areas that are larger or have more severe damage may require several sessions before improvements become apparent.
What can it Treat?
Micro-needling can be used to correct a wide variety of common aesthetic issues on nearly any area of the skin. These include:
- Wrinkles
- Stretch marks
- Scars
- Loose skin
- Discoloration
Because micro-needling opens up channels in the dermis, it can also be used in conjunction with topical treatments to increase their effectiveness. These include growth factors and anti-aging serums.
Am I a Good Candidate for Micro-Needling?
Nearly anyone interested in correcting wrinkles, loose skin, scarring, or discoloration is an ideal candidate for microneedling. This treatment can be used even on the most sensitive areas of the body, and is safe for all skin types and ethnicities. Unfortunately, people who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have used Accutane in the past six months, have undergone radiation treatment in the past year, have open wounds, cuts, abrasions, or active skin infections, or have a history of hypertrophic scarring cannot undergo this treatment.
