As some patients grow older, they have a desire to remove their breast implants. This may be for a variety of reasons.
- Problems with the implants such as capsular contracture or rupture
- Some patients feel that their breast are now too large and make them look overweight after gaining some weight in their breasts
- Some patients have concern that their implants may be contributing to certain autoimmune problems related to their health
Regardless of the reason or desire to remove the implants, many patients do not know there are options for maintaining breast shape and size after implant removal. The SIEF Procedure stands for Simultaneous Implant Exchange with Fat grafting. This is a single stage procedure where the implants are removed and the volume is replaced with fat that is grafted into the breast tissue and muscle. The fat is typically harvested from areas of excess fat accumulation such as the lower abdomen, flanks, inner thighs and arms. This fat is harvested in a very careful manner and then is processed. This processed fat is then meticulously injected in to the chest in order to reshape and volumize the breast. Some patients may also benefit from a breast lift that can be done at the same time. The SIEF procedure is done as an outpatient surgery and generally requires only a week of recovery.
Patients enjoy the peace of mind of having their implants gone, no need for future breast surgeries due to implant problems but also better contour of their body because of the liposuction component of the procedure.
