As we age, our bodies begin producing progressively less of certain substances that help maintain resilient, hydrated, youthful skin. This process leads to skin that develops wrinkles, folds and skin that loses volume. Hollows can begin appearing under the eyes and on the cheeks. This can leave people with a haggard, tired look and lead to a loss of self-esteem that can negatively affect relationships and even work.
Micro-Needling
This treatment is something that is just now coming into the mainstream in terms of awareness and acceptance. Also known as collagen induction therapy, micro-needling is a non-surgical and minimally-invasive treatment for skin rejuvenation involving the use of a micro-needle device to form many tiny micro-channels.
As the device is passed over the skin, micro-channels are created. The body responds by depositing fresh collagen and elastin. This process leads to the formation of new blood vessels and skin tissue, as well as minimizing scars and discoloration. Micro-needling results in skin with improved firmness, texture and hydration.
What are the Benefits?
Micro-needling reduces the appearance of scars, including acne scars; fades stretch marks; reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; tightens sagging skin; and minimizes skin discoloration. It also helps with skin conditions like hyperpigmentation, making it safe for use on those with darker skin. The treatment is also suitable for those with thin or sensitive skin.
The Procedure
This treatment can be performed in-office without the need for expensive instruments. The treated skin does not have an obvious line of demarcation between treated and untreated skin, so no post-treatment blending is needed.
Patients may benefit from multiple micro-needling treatments for optimum results or to tackle deeper wrinkles or scars. Patients should also give their skin several weeks to heal, however, before undergoing another treatment.
How many micro-needling treatments are needed is dependent upon each individual and their own skin condition at the time of treatment. Moderate acne scars may require three to four treatments, while stretch marks and thermal burns may require up to five treatments.
Micro-Needling Combinations
Micro-needling can significantly enhance the efficacy of certain types of topical skin care products. This is because the process creates many tiny channels through which the topical can pass and reach deeper layers of the skin. The skin normally has a barrier consisting of dead skin cells and cellular debris that can make it difficult for certain topical formulations to penetrate and be effective. Micro-needling allows the topicals to easily flow into the channels it creates, significantly enhancing skin penetration.
