What Is Xeomin Used for?

Are wrinkles and lines on your face making you look older, wearier, or more upset than you are? Do you miss the glowing, soft skin you had when you were younger? You may be interested in Xeomin, a simple cosmetic solution that can stop the clock on aging skin and leave you looking refreshed and more youthful in just a few minutes. Our team at Metairie Plastic Surgeons here in Metairie, LA, is excited to help you achieve your beauty goals.

What Is Xeomin Used For?

This incredible injectable is used to reduce the appearance of “dynamic wrinkles”, which are the lines on the face that develop as the result of repeated facial movements. In particular, it’s an excellent remedy against wrinkles around the eyes, eyebrows, and forehead. These might include the “eleven” lines that appear between the eyebrows, vertical forehead lines, and crow’s feet around the edge of the eyes. When the effects kick in, patients notice a significant reduction in the appearance of lines, leaving their skin looking smoother and gorgeous.

Are My Wrinkles Dynamic Wrinkles?

There’s a simple way to see if your wrinkles are dynamic: do they become more pronounced when you move your face? If the answers yes, then they’re likely dynamic wrinkles. Many people go to great lengths to minimize their appearance, trying to limit how much they move their faces. But who wants to spend all day worrying about how much they’re talking or laughing? With this treatment, you can feel confident that lines aren’t forming as you talk, and get back to enjoying life without feeling stressed.

So How Exactly Does This Treatment Work?

This treatment is a neuromodulator, which means it doesn’t target the skin directly, but actually the nerves underneath. The product uses the key ingredient botulinum Type A which, when injected into the face, blocks communication between the nerves and the muscles nearby. Now when the nerves try to talk to muscles to tell them to move, the muscles won’t respond, and the skin on top of them will stay smooth and uncreased even as you talk, laugh, frown, and whatever else!

Is This Treatment Safe?

This treatment has had FDA approval to treat severe lines around the eyes since 2010. Not only that, but neuromodulators are the most frequently-used cosmetic treatment in the USA, which a lot of patients find comforting as it demonstrates what a tried and tested solution it is. Because the treatment is minimally invasive, there are none of the risks that accompany surgery such as infection or a reaction to the anesthetic. There are no additives in the formula used in this treatment, which means it’s highly unlikely that the body will have an allergic response to it.

Is Treatment the Unique to Me in Any Way?

This treatment is specifically tailored to every individual patient. We design you a treatment plan that’s based on your cosmetic concerns, the areas needing treatment, and even things like how thick your skin is! The plan measures out things like how many injections will be needed and how many units of product we’ll be using. If you come back for more sessions in the future, we can either follow along with this plan again or update it to treat new concerns you may have.

What Will Happen During My Treatment?

Your Consultation

The first step of the process is to come in for a chat with a member of our expert staff here at Metairie Plastic Surgeons. This will be your opportunity to talk us through your cosmetic concerns and what you’re hoping to get out of treatment. We’ll make sure this treatment is the best option for you, which includes looking over your medical history and any medications you’re on to ensure you’re a healthy candidate. If everything looks good, we’ll draw up your treatment plan.

Steps To Take

Ahead of your treatment, there are a few things to avoid to ensure your skin is prepared. Blood-thinning medications like fish oil tablets and aspirin should not be taken so to minimize your chances of bruising. We’ll also ask that you stay out of harsh sunlight so you don’t get burnt. When you come in for your session, your face must be clean and free of makeup so that there’s no risk of a foreign substance touching the needle and contaminating it.

On the Day

Treatment is performed in-house in our gorgeous Metairie office. Unlike surgical options, you won’t need a local or general anesthetic, instead you will remain alert throughout treatment. Don’t worry, we will apply a topical numbing cream to the treatment area to ensure your comfort! We’ll make the injections using a needle that’s so fine many patients say they can’t even feel it. The process only takes about fifteen simple minutes, and then you’re all finished!

Is There a Long Recovery Period?

Patients love that there’s zero downtime asked of them following treatment. You’ll be able to immediately head back to work or errand-running, even driving yourself to and from your appointment. It’s quicker and less hassle than getting a haircut! We will ask that you stay away from certain things in the days right after treatment, including using retinol, spending time in extreme heat, and doing rigorous exercise. These will only be very short-term changes to assist in your skin’s healing, then you can return to your normal lifestyle.

How Long Will It Take To See Results?

Generally, it will take between five and ten days after your treatment to spot results. Your body will absorb the product, metabolizing it and eventually letting it settle. It’s then that the communication between nerves and muscles will cease, meaning the muscles stop moving even as you move your face. The skin on top now stays soft and supple, meaning you don’t have to worry about looking tired, angry, or older anymore!

How Long Will the Results Last?

The stunning results will last for up to six months! The exact length of time will depend on the individual and how their body works. During this time, you’ll be able to enjoy soft, youthful skin that doesn’t crease. When you start to notice the effects wearing off, you can simply rebook a follow-up session with us and we can help you get the same results all over again. This session will be as quick and easy as the first!

Do the Results Look Natural?

You may be worried about the “frozen” look that’s often associated with neuromodulators. But this treatment is so targeted that the final result is very subtle; it doesn’t affect any nearby areas, so the rest of the face still moves as normal. The lines softening gives the patient a very refreshed look that still keeps them looking like themselves. Basically, if you want to tell people you just had a really great facial, you can!

Am I a Good Candidate for This Treatment?

If you’re over 18 and struggling with dynamic wrinkles that have you feeling insecure and less like yourself, we recommend you come in for a consultation. While many of our clients are in their 40s and 50s, we recognize that these concerns can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or skin tone, so we’d be happy to see you and talk you through treatment! Certain medical conditions, as well as pregnancy, may render you ineligible for treatment, but if this is the case we will happily talk you through some alternatives.

What Is the Difference Between Xeomin and Botox?

While these neuromodulators work very similarly, there’s one critical difference in their formula. Botox uses botulinum toxin, while Xeomin – as mentioned above – uses purely botulinum Type A. This slight tweak in the formula lowers the risk of a patient having an allergic reaction to the product, plus a lack of additives in botulinum Type A means it will be harder for your body to build an immunity to it. Botox can also be used in more places than its counterpart, demonstrating proven effectiveness all over the face.
