Sculpted, Firm, Youthful Upper Arms Can Be Yours.

After significant weight loss, it is common to experience sagging, stretched skin on the upper arms that gets in the way of thoroughly enjoying the weight loss results. Dr. Trey Sands at SANDS Aesthetics + Plastic Surgery performs custom arm lifts in New Orleans to correct this condition with as little downtime as possible.

What is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift, or in medical terms, a “brachioplasty,” is a procedure to reshape, recontour, and correct the look of the upper arms. It is often performed to assist patients who have lost significant weight and are left with sagging loose skin, or age-related upper arm sagging. The procedure removes excess skin and any pockets of fat to create a tighter, more toned appearance to the arms, sculpted and firm. This procedure is life-changing for many patients who have felt they must hide their arms with loose clothing and are now entirely comfortable in sleeveless tops and swimwear.

How is an Arm Lift Performed?

During arm lift surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Trey Sands, will place incisions on the underside of the upper arm to remove excess skin and fat. The remaining skin is then pulled taut and sutured to create a tighter, smoother appearance. In some cases, liposuction may be administered to remove excess fat from the area.

Who is a Candidate for an Arm Lift?

Arm lift surgery is performed for cosmetic reasons, to improve the appearance of sagging skin and fat on the upper arms. This procedure is often performed on patients who have lost a significant amount of weight, as the skin that has lost the elasticity to bounce back. It is also the chosen surgery for patients with age-related sagging in the upper arms, a common aesthetic problem. For some, arm lift surgery may be necessary for medical reasons. When excess skin on the upper arms leads to irritation and discomfort, removing it can restore greater comfort, particularly during the hot, humid New Orleans summers.

Types of Arm Lift Surgeries

At SANDS Aesthetics + Plastic Surgery, every arm lift is customized to suit the patient’s condition. The types of arm lift surgeries include:

Traditional Arm Lift

A traditional arm lift, or “full brachioplasty,” is the most extensive arm lift surgery. It involves an incision from the underarm to the elbow, through which excess skin and fat are removed, and the underlying muscle structure tightened. This arm lift technique may be ideal for patients with significant excess skin and fat in the upper arm area.

Limited-Incision Arm Lift

The limited-incision arm lift, or “mini brachioplasty,” is a less invasive type of approach. A smaller incision is placed in the armpit, through which excess skin and fat are removed. This type of arm lift is suitable for patients with mild to moderate excess skin and fat in the upper arm area.

Extended Arm Lift

The extended arm lift, or “circumferential brachioplasty,” is the most extensive arm lift surgery. The procedure involves an incision around the entire upper arm, removing excess skin and fat and tightening the underlying muscles. This type of arm lift is best suited for patients with significant excess skin and fat in the upper arms, extending onto the back.
