Are You a Candidate for a Custom Tummy Tuck?

Have you had fluctuations in weight or multiple pregnancies? These life experiences can leave you with an abdomen that has lost its youthful tone and firmness, with stretch marks and bulges leave you feeling you must hide with loose clothing. Unfortunately, the human body is often unable to fully recover when overstretched due to weight gain, pregnancy, or due to aging, stretched muscles and skin. In these cases, a custom tummy tuck, also called an abdominoplasty, is performed to restore the firm, fit, sculpted look of a healthy, youthful body. The specific technique used will vary based on the individual’s condition.

Types of Tummy Tuck Procedures

Standard Abdominoplasty

This surgical approach may be appropriate for patients with excessive skin laxity and fatty deposits. The skin is elevated from the groin to the lower rib cage, along with tightening the abdominal wall muscles to create a firm, sculpted look. The belly button is relocated to be ideally centered on the newly reshaped abdomen for the ultimate improvement.

Mini-Tummy Tuck

This surgical approach is less extensive, and appropriate for patients who have unwanted fatty deposits and excess skin on the lower abdomen.

Vertical (Fleur de lis) Tummy Tuck

A vertical tummy tuck or fleur de lis tummy tuck is an advanced technique that has both a lower, hip to hip incision and a midline incision. These treatments are only appropriate for patients with severe skin laxity, such as following a dramatic weight loss after bariatric surgery or diet and exercise.

Extended Tummy Tuck

This procedure is ideal for patients who need a more thorough degree of body resculpting. The incision reaches across the lower abdomen and around the hips, and may involve a vertical incision for some patients with an excess of loose skin and fat in these areas.

The Difference Between a Tummy Tuck and a Mini Tummy Tuck

A popular alternative to the traditional tummy tuck procedure is the mini tummy tuck. When compared to the standard tummy tuck surgery, a mini tummy tuck is less invasive, costs less, and requires a shorter recovery period. However, the results that can be achieved during a mini tummy tuck are somewhat limited.

During a mini tummy tuck, Dr. Sands typically makes only one small incision beneath the belly button. This allows him to remove excess skin and tissue from the lower abdomen. He will also be able to adjust and tighten the lower abdominal muscles. However, unlike a full tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck will not be able to address the middle or upper areas of the abdomen.

Generally, a mini tummy tuck is an excellent choice for individuals who prefer a less invasive procedure and subtler results. The procedure is also a good option if you’re concerned about noticeable scarring or a long recovery period. During your consultation with Dr. Sands, he will discuss your treatment options with you to help you determine whether a full tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck is the better choice for your situation.

Tummy Tuck Surgery and Scarring

All abdominoplasty surgeries involve scars, but the difference in the extent and visibility of scars reflects the skills and techniques of the plastic surgeon. Dr. Sands takes great care in placing incisions, ensuring that when the incisions heal, they are placed in a manner that leaves them invisible to others, even when wearing the most revealing bikini bottoms. The natural contours of the tummy, along with a carefully placed and natural-looking belly button, are what set Dr. Sands apart from other surgeons.

What is the Tummy Tuck Experience?

An abdominoplasty of any type is major surgery, and as such, must be performed in the most technically advanced and hygienic environment. All our tummy tucks in New Orleans are performed in accredited surgical facilities which are associated with a major community hospital, where patient comfort, safety, and health are given top priority. You will not experience any pain during the surgery, as it is performed under general anesthesia, administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. When you awaken, you will not remember the surgery. Your abdomen will be protected with bandages to protect your newly reshaped tummy area. Once alert, you will be released to return home, under the care of another adult.

After surgery, you will have your first follow-up appointment the next day, at our office. This achieves three goals:

  • It gets you out of bed and ambulating, which helps prevent the formation of blood clots.
  • Dr. Sands can immediately address any issues that may arise that could intensify if not resolved.
  • It allows you and your carer to ask questions that often arise during the first night after surgery.
